History of our school

A Journey Through Time:

Nestled in the heart of Springs, Gauteng, Strubenvale Primary School stands as a testament to over seven decades of education, community, and resilience. As we celebrate our rich history in 2025, let’s take a stroll back in time to uncover the story of how our beloved school came to be and how it has grown into the vibrant institution it is today.

The Birth of a School: 1950
Strubenvale Primary School opened its doors in 1950, a year that marked a new chapter for the Strubenvale suburb in Springs. This was a time when South Africa was rebuilding after World War II, and Springs—born as a coal and gold mining town in 1904—had blossomed into a bustling industrial hub. The East Rand’s population was growing, and with it came the need for schools to educate the children of miners, factory workers, and families putting down roots in the area. Located at 77 Athlone Avenue, Strubenvale Primary emerged as a cornerstone of this expanding community, ready to serve learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7.

From the beginning, our school embraced a motto that would define its spirit: "Strive to Achieve." It was a call to action, reflecting the determination and hardworking ethos of Springs’ residents. In those early days, the school was more than just a place of learning—it was a gathering point for a community forging its identity amidst the clatter of industry and the promise of a brighter future.

Growing with Springs
As Springs evolved through the mid-20th century, so did Strubenvale Primary. The town’s shift from a mining-centric economy to a broader industrial base brought new families to the area, and our school grew to meet their needs. By the late 20th century, Strubenvale Primary had established itself as a fixture in the Gauteng East Education District, adapting to the changing educational landscape of South Africa.

The 1990s brought significant transformation with the end of apartheid and the introduction of the South African Schools Act of 1996. As a Section 21 school, Strubenvale Primary gained the ability to manage its own finances with government support, ensuring it could continue to provide quality education. Classified as a Quintile 5 school—one of the better-resourced public schools—it reflected the relative stability of the Springs community while remaining committed to accessibility for all learners.

A Legacy of Care and Excellence
Over the decades, Strubenvale Primary has become known as "a school that cares"—not just for its learners, but for its teachers and the wider community. With a student body that has grown to over 860 learners and a dedicated staff of more than 30 educators, the school has balanced academic rigor with a nurturing environment. Our curriculum has expanded beyond the basics to include life skills, creative arts, and physical education, preparing generations of Strubies for the challenges of the modern world.

While the specifics of every principal, classroom expansion, or standout alumnus may not all be etched in public records, the essence of Strubenvale Primary’s history lies in its steadfast presence. For 75 years, it has weathered economic shifts, societal changes, and educational reforms, all while keeping its doors open to the children of Springs.

Today and Tomorrow
As we stand in 2025, Strubenvale Primary School is more than a historical landmark—it’s a living, breathing community. Our active engagement with parents and families, seen through platforms like our social media pages, keeps the Strubie spirit alive.
