1. PURPOSE OF RULES

Rules are drawn up to realize the values contained in the code. The purpose of rules is,Behaviour therefore, to:

  • Create and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Define acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
  • Promote educational goals.
  1. SCHOOL RULES
    • Follow instructions the first time. Obey school rules.
    • Keep your hands, feet, objects and unkind words to yourself.
    • Listen while someone else is talking.
    • Look after personal and school property.
    • Behave appropriately and with respect towards others.
    • No chewing of bubblegum.
  2. GENERAL BEHAVIOUR
    • Behavior rules are set to ensure the safety and well-being of all at Strubenvale. All learners are therefore expected to cooperate in the best interests of ALL.
    • Learners are to respect educators, elders and other learners at all times.
    • Recalcitrant behaviour (defiance of authority, disobedience – wilful or otherwise despicable, wayward, sullen, disrespectful or perverse) will not be tolerated.
    • No pornographic and other indecent material (on any medium) is allowed on school premises. Intoxicating substances, alcohol, cigarettes or dependence forming medicine or drugs may not be brought onto school premises. If any of these items are found in a learners possession, it will result in Disciplinary Hering.
    • Learners are to always respect the educators’ and other learners’ property.
    • Truancy is unacceptable and is contravention of the law. Learners who are absent must have a letter of absenteeism from their parents. (Absenteeism for 3 days and more requires a doctor’s certificate). Absenteeism on a test day will require a certified medical certificate for the child to receive an average of his / her term mark, absenteeism on a test day without a medical certificate will mean a “nil” evaluation. Not going to the correct substitution class is also regarded as bunking.
    • Movement along corridors to be as quiet as possible. Keep left and walk in a single file, boys first then girls, when moving around the school. No running is permitted on the corridors or quads. No swinging of Caddie cases.
    • No ball games are permitted on the corridors, the quad or playgrounds.
    • Learners are not permitted in the staffroom. They are not permitted in the hall or classrooms without being accompanied by an educator.
    • Learners may not be accompanied by friends when visiting the admin office.
    • Learners out of class during periods must wear a visible pass-out.
    • Learners may not arrive late at school. Latecomers will be defaulted.
    • No toys, pets, guns, combs, darts, knives, Ninja equipment or any object that can be construed to be a weapon, may be brought to school. These items will be confiscated.

Learners who do not attend extra murals need to go home straight after school at the official closing time. Poor behavior on the pavement, big field and school property will be defaulted.

Behaviour in public

A Strubenvale learner, whether in school uniform or not, must strive to uphold the name, image and ethos of his school by always applying basic manners. No spitting, throwing of missiles, littering and swearing, use of obscene signs or any form of indecent behavior, is allowed.

  1. CONDUCT DURING BREAKS AND SCHOOL TIMES
    • No fighting, bullying or any form of assault will be tolerated.
    • No indecent behavior.
    • Play to be conducted in demarcated areas only.
    • No rough or dangerous play.
    • Water fountains are for drinking only.
    • No ball games to be played.
    • No cellphones may be used.
  2. SCHOOLWORK
    • Each educator has the right to enforce his / her own class rules.
    • All books / files and equipment as per daily timetable must be brought to school. Parents are not allowed to bring forgotten items, homework, projects and lunch to school.
    • Homework and projects must be handed in on the due date.
    • A replacement fee of R300 is to be paid for lost or damaged textbooks or library books. Lost exercise books are to be replaced by parents.
  3. BEHAVIOUR RULES

I understand the type of behavior expected from me at all times is as follows:

In the Classroom I will:

  • Line up quietly in an orderly manner.
  • Be prompt and on time for lessons.
  • Lead in and stand quietly behind my desk.
  • Wait to greet the teacher before being seated.
  • Listen to instructions.
  • Respect my own equipment as well as that of other people.
  • Make sure that I have my own equipment and stationery so that I do not have to borrow from others.
  • Raise my hand when I wish to say or ask something.
  • Not interrupting while someone else is speaking.
  • Not being disruptive, thereby preventing the other learners from receiving quality education.
  • Respect textbooks and all other equipment.
  • Not touching or removing anything from my teacher’s desk.
  • Not throwing any objects across the classroom.
  • Not challenging a teacher’s authority during a lesson but rather speak to him / her privately after the lesson.
  • Pick up any litter around my desk and place my chair neatly under my desk before leaving the classroom.
  • Complete all home – and classwork assignments to the best of my ability.
  • Be honest in all my work (including tests) and in all I say.
  • Stand up and greet an adult who enters the classroom.
  • No eat or chew bubble gum while on school premises.

On the playground, I will:

  • Avoid rough or dangerous games.
  • Not playing ball games.
  • Avoid fighting.
  • Refrain from using unacceptable language.
  • Play in the designated areas, i.e. Grade R’s, 1’s and 2’s on their respective playgrounds, Grade 4-7 learners on the big field.
  • Remember that all classrooms and parking areas are strictly out of bounds during breaks, as well as before and after school.
  • Move aside to allow an adult to pass.
  • Include other children in my games.
  • Consider other children and not disrupt their games.
  • Move quickly to class when the bell rings.
  • Get up and greet adults when they walk past.
  • Use toilets – no urinating on the playground.
  • Not taking other learners’ food or money
  • Not bully anyone!

During Sporting activities, I will:

  • Dress appropriately and neatly in the proper sporting attire.
  • Display sportsmanship whether winning or losing.
  • Respect the umpire’s / referee’s / educator’s decisions.
  • Thank the umpire / referee / educator at the end of the match / practice.
  • Listen to instructions.
  • Sit quietly while being transported.
  • Thank the driver and coach.
  • Assist the teacher in accounting for all the equipment and packing it away neatly.
  • Attend every practice / match or make my apologies to the educator / coach.
  • As a spectator I will be wearing a full school uniform.

During Cultural Activities, I will:

  • Listen to instructions and announcements.
  • Respect the venue I am using and not touch anything that does not belong to me in the venue.
  • Pack all equipment away neatly.
  • Leave the venue in a neat, orderly and acceptable condition.
  • As a spectator I will be wearing a full school uniform.

At School, I will:

  • Not running or playing on the corridors.
  • Keep left and walk briskly and in single file when moving from one class to another.
  • Not tamper with safety equipment.
  • Not leave school grounds or the classroom during school hours without the permission of the principal or educator.
  • Not bring pets or toys or valuables to school.
  • Obey the instructions of prefects, monitors, scholar patrol and fire-fighting members without complaint.
  • Leave the school premises by 14:00 unless I am attending Remedial classes, detention or an extramural activity.
  • Not involve me in any form of initiation and unmannerly farewell celebrations.
  • Not be guilty of any form of rowdiness or loud behavior.
  • Not bring and distribute undesirable reading matter by hand or on social media.
  • Enter and exit from the hall in an orderly and disciplined manner. Report any accidental breakages to the office immediately.
  • Not climbing over or any school fence or tree
  • Not roller blades, skateboard or cycle on school premises.
  • Keep my hair neat, clean and in an appropriate style suitable for primary school learners.
  • Keep my nails short, clean and free from nail varnish / polish.
  • Exercise exemplary behavior when making use of public transport.
  • Behave as an ambassador to my school when on an excursion or tour or in public.
  • Bring a note written and signed by my parents or doctor’s note upon my return to school after I have been absent.
  • Catch up on any work I miss after I have been absent.
  • Not smoking or consuming alcohol or any other illegal substances for my age.
  • Switch my cellphone off before entering the school grounds and keep it switched off while on school property.
    • Computer Room – In the computer room I will:
  • Not running, eating or drinking.
  • Not go onto any internet sites or social media sites without permission.
  • Sit at my designated computer.
  • Take care of the computer equipment and do not deface or damage it in any way.
  • Not swap any of the components around e.g. mouse and keyboard.
    • General Manners

I will:

  • Arrive on time for school – by 07:25
  • Say “please” and “thank you”.
  • Always greet all adults.
  • Stay away from carports because they are always out of bounds.
  • Refrain from throwing any objects on the playground or in the classrooms.
  • No littering.
  • Not use unacceptable language.
  • Not deface any desks or school property, as this is vandalism.
  • Not remove or tamper with anything that does not belong to me.
  • Refrain from any form of challenge an educator’s authority whatsoever.
  • Speak to the educator personally at an appropriate time after the lesson if I have a problem.
  • Use the toilets and leave them clean. Not wasting toilet paper or hand towels. Place used hand towels in the bin provided.
  1. GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE

Report bullying to the class teacher, then HOD, then Deputy and finally the principal.

  1. GENERAL
    • Parents may NOT go to the classrooms during school hours or expect interviews with teachers during contact time.
    • Cellphones are to be switched off when entering the school premises. Learners failing to adhere to this rule will be defaulted and the item will be confiscated, and parents will be expected to collect confiscated phones from the office.
    • Behavior deemed to be socially unacceptable will be treated as misconduct irrespective of specific inclusion in the school rules and policies. Such behavior will be dealt with in a manner to be determined by the Principal, the School Governing Body and the relevant laws governing education in South Africa.
    • All confiscated items other than cellphones can only be collected at a convenient time for the school by parents during the term or by the child at the end of the term.
  2. AS A LEARNER, I PROMISE TO
    • Be proud of my school and to be a good example by wearing my uniform with pride and always behaving in a dignified manner.
    • Accept that the main reason for being in school is to learn and develop academically, socially and culturally.
    • Adhere to school rules.
    • Respect the authority of teachers.
    • Show respect to other learners and not to unfairly discriminate.
    • Avoid anti-social behavior (for example, theft, vandalism, assault, sexual harassment, alcohol and drug abuse) as well as other conduct that disrupts the learning process.
    • Accept responsibility for my actions; and
    • Accept any sanctions or other consequences that may be imposed in line with this code.
  3. AS A PARENT, I PROMISE TO
    • Support the school in every way possible.
    • Support my child to observe all school rules and regulations and accept responsibility for any misbehavior on their part.
